Introduction to Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection System (FPI)
A truly remarkable technology for non destructive testing of component parts for defects. The essence of its working principle lies in the fact that when the defects (cracks or surface flaws), covering in part of the component of interest are impregnated with a chemical dye, they fluoresce under a source of ultraviolet light.
In yesteryear, many FPI systems were operated on a manual mode. A manual operation of the FPI system would require the operator to adopt and execute numerous standard operating practices and procedures. This often involved time consuming manual setting of various critical parameters needed of each stage in the process. In addition, the required efficiency and consistency were hardly achievable by human operation.
